Personal Note from Chris
This has no business coming out so late in the month. But I started putting it together and I'm going to finish it. Future month's stuff will come out close to the start of the month.
RECENT EPISODES ROUNDUP
- Pokemon Fire Red and Leaf Green with Connor (July 6, 2025)
My friend Connor from my local comic store has been someone I wanted on the show for a while. For whatever reason we hadn't been able to nail anything down. And then he threw out the idea of Pokemon. Which I thought was kind of funny because people had asked about Pokemon from a listener perspective before. I'd even asked a few specific people about coming on the show to cover Pokemon. Nothing. And then Connor asked about it. Once I realized he was serious I knew I had to make it happen.
- Mazin Saga Mutant Fighter with Stik Braxton (Together we Anime, Too Tall Boyz, Clueless Vino) (July 13, 2025)
Stik Braxton from Together We Anime, Too Tall Boyz, and Clueless Vino is someone I'd heard a few times on Gimmicks and knew I had to find a way to get him on the show. It was the normal pitch to essentially a random person. Hey, this is what I'm doing. I would like to get you on the show." Nothing weird. And I had a good feeling he'd pick something manga related. But I never would have guessed that he'd get so excited about Mazin Saga Mutant Fighter.
- Spider-Man (2002) with Chris Ferrell (All Things Good and Nerdy, The Official GonnaGeek Show) (July 20, 2025)
Chris Ferrell from All Things Good and Nerdy and The Official GonnaGeek Show! was the easiest pitch ever. "Hey Chris, want to talk Spider-Man?" Seriously, it was that easy. This one is exactly what it says on the tin. A huge Spidey fan talking about one of the most beloved Spidey games. What more could you want?
BEHIND THE CURTAIN: PODCAST INSIGHTS
I hate that I've had the Patreon set up for years and have done basically nothing with it. It's been a cycle where I don't really like putting content behind a paywall so the only option is to have early content. There was a small period where I'd do Patreon First bonus episodes that were just tangentially related to the concept of comics and/or gaming but even those dried up because it just felt weird to throw the link out to the world but people had to pay to get access.
I've found a way to make it work.
This newsletter will go out to Patrons as a video. Inevitably they'll get some extra content because when I start talking I just kind of go. I'll probably end up releasing the video later publicly as well because that's just how I roll so even if you get the newsletter it'll be worth watching if you've already read this.
ON THE HORIZON: UPCOMING EPISODES
Here's what we're looking at coming out in September.
- Garfield Search for Pooky with Ryan Estrada
- Lucky Luke with Dr. Queso de la Muerte
- Ultimate Spider-Man with Derek B Gayle and Doug Fink
- Asterix & Obelix Kick Buttix (XXL) with Chas! Pangburn
- Disney's PK Out of the Shadows with Esh Johansen
COMMUNITY CORNER
Normally there would be something here about some stuff that's come from social media or sent to me or something like that. But I don't want to think about if what I've seen came early enough for this or should wait until the September release so I'm just going to save things for that one.
RECOMMENDED READS, WATCHES, LISTENS, & PLAYS
- Comics/Books: Superman Smashes the Klan. I just love it and think everyone should read it. It shouldn't be as relevant today as it is and I love it for that.
- Games: Super Mario Kart. No, I didn't make a mistake here. Basically every other version of this game is someone's favorite. But never this one. I just feel like it doesn't get the love it deserves as the foundation of the entire series.
- Movies/TV: Reborn as a Vending Machine, I Now Wander the Dungeon is an Isekai (a story where the main character has to survive in another world) where an unnamed vending machine falls on and kills a boy, and then the boy is reborn on another world as a sentient vending machine. It's exactly what it says on the tin and yet probably not what you're expecting at all.
- Podcasts: Super Mario Moment is just fun and it's new so you can catch up before there's a giant backlog. It's a look at Mario things and while every episode so far has been specifically about a game, that won't always be the case and from what Hamish has said online it won't even be the case for very long.
Call to Action
Want more Play Comics?
If you want to help support the show, there's always Patreon. Like I said earlier I'm going to make a real effort to make that worth it.
If you're reading this far, I have a question for you.
Which of my solo episodes here do you think deserve to get redone and have a proper episode with a guest and everything?
Responses will be highlighted in the next update video.
